A spiritual calling

Many of us who are on a spiritual path know that we want to gain spiritual understanding, and to shape our own lives according to that understanding. And many of us also feel the call to put that spiritual understanding to greater use in the world.

The vision of the New Age movement, the vision of a better world through spiritual and social transformation, a better world of peace, harmony, justice and co-operation is one way for us to do this. Applying what we learn in our spiritual path to transforming the world, and joining with others with this common goal, benefits not just our own lives and those around us but the whole of the world as well. As we raise our own consciousness, we raise the consciousness of the world, and move farther along the path of transformation.

It is a spiritual calling – to be part of something larger than oneself. Spiritual awakening is not only awakening to one’s own spiritual nature and path, it is also about awakening to our own role in the transformation of the world. Whether you join in this vision in your own spiritual practice by yourself or as part of a group, you are part of this larger vision. Your spiritual path is part of a great road of awakening and transformation that leads to a splendid new world.

World Peace Meditation

In the 1980s, one of the highlights of every year for me was the December 31 World Peace Meditation, known also as the World Healing Day, World Instant of Co-operation, and World Peace Day. It was a time for people all over the world to gather in meditation for world peace and world healing.

Word of it first circulated in 1984, and although the creators of this event designated 1986 as the time for it to start, many of us began holding the gathering in 1984 in our local areas. By 1986 it was in fact a worldwide event.

This one hour group meditation was so very powerful to experience. It was held at the same time all over the world (noon Greenwich time) and the group energy that was created was multiplied so many times over. Imagine yourself linked in meditation to millions of people with the intent of creating peace and healing all over the world! It was an uplifting, inspiring, and healing experience.

I don’t know how many people still celebrate World Healing Day, but I would like to encourage everyone to join in this year, whether it is by yourself or with a group. I would love to see the World Healing Day spreading again to the numbers that participated in it years ago, and even beyond. You can help spread the word about it, join with a group, or meditate on your own (although not alone!). Every bit you can do is important – one by one we make up those millions of people. And if you do join in, I hope you find it as powerful, healing, and joyful as I have.

The New Age revival has already begun

The more I reach out and connect with other people interested in the New Age, the more inspired I become in my own path. I have found so many people still holding true to the original vision of the New Age movement, and they are the seeds of the New Age revival.

In the public eye the movement’s meaning and goal may have faded, but there are many individuals and groups still living it. What is needed now is for all these people and groups to connect with one another and become not isolated people or groups, but the movement itself. We are already finding each other through social networking on the Internet. The next step is to reach out to other spiritual seekers and encourage them to include the New Age movement as a process of the spiritual transformation of the whole world in their spiritual path.

We each make the world a better place through our own transformation, but when we join together to focus on transforming the world we find a larger purpose in our lives. Many of us are looking for just such a meaning in our spiritual search; for us, it is not enough to become peaceful in ourselves, we want to embrace the whole world and heal it.

If you feel this calling, please join with us in meditation, in networking, in sharing the vision in whatever way feels right to you. Your part in the New Age movement, and in its revival, is important. Imagine that New Age on Earth, that better world of peace, harmony, justice and co-operation, and know that we can create it. As an invidual, as part of a group, as a global network of people, whatever way you choose, you can help transform the world.

Re-awaken the vision

One of the most important things we can do to help revive the New Age movement in its original form is to educate people about what that original form is. People now think “New Age” and they think of things like crystals, channeling, tarot, astrology and other “flaky” (their word, not mine!) things. Because of this, people who are actually part of the New Age movement (and who included themselves in the early days of the movement), people who are working for peace, the environment, social issues, etc., have disassociated themselves from the term “New Age”. And people who are on their own personal spiritual paths are often proceeding alone, not aware that what they are going through is part of the process of the spiritual transformation of the world. We need both social and spiritual transformation to create a better world, this New Age on Earth of peace, justice, harmony, and co-operation.

So we need to remind people of the grand vision that the New Age movement really is, and ask them to join, or re-join, and help create this better world. Let them know how important each one of us is to this process.

There are so many ways we can reach out and inform people. Talk to people we know; talk to people at local New Age bookstores and New Age centers and ask them to help spread the word. Attend or hold gatherings of New Age people. Write to publications. Use the Internet lavishly! We can reach so many people now, in such a short time. Forums, groups, Facebook, MySpace, blogs, websites, e-newsletters, all are vehicles to reach other people and remind them of the meaning and intent of the original New Age movement and ask them to join in. Please feel free to share this blog with others as part of your reaching out, if you think it will help educate people.

It is up to us to help create the better world that is the vision of the New Age. And it is up to us to help spread the message of what that vision is. There is a large meaning and purpose for those of us on this path; let us invite others to join with us and share the vision and the joy of creating our better world!

Dances of Universal Peace

Some of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in the New Age movement have been participating in the Dances of Universal Peace. These simple circle dances are a wonderful celebration of the different spiritual traditions of the world.

From their website (http://dancesofuniversalpeace.org/about.htm): “Dances include themes of peace (both inner and outer), healing (the Earth, individuals, and the global family), and the celebration of life’s great mystery. Dancers focus on peace and harmony creating a sense of solidarity and community while celebrating the underlying unity of all the spiritual traditions of the Earth.”

The spirit of joy, celebration and togetherness that these dances create is wonderful. The energy of people coming together to participate in honoring all sacred traditions is something that this world could use more of! If we truly want to create a world of peace, harmony and understanding, joining together in this kind of spirit is a beautiful step on that path.

If we do not do it, who will?

Are you satisfied with the world the way it is? Do you think it is a world of peace, justice, harmony, and co-operation? If not, would you like to see a better world? Who do you think would make that happen?

Human nature is what it is. And what it is has created the world we live in today. To change it, we must rise above human nature and think and act from our spiritual nature. That is what the New Age movement is about.

If we all sit back and wait for someone else to do it for us, there will be no change. We are the world, and only we can change it. It is up to each one of us to do our part to raise our own consciousness, and to reach out and help raise the consciousness of the world.

What kind of world do you want to pass on to future generations – to your children, to your grandchildren? Would it be worth putting some time and attention to helping to change it?

Please consider joining in and helping create a better world for us all. Never underestimate the effect you can have – the part each one of us plays is important. And the more of us there are who join in, the faster we can make the vision of the New Age on Earth a reality.

The role of the Internet in the New Age revival

In the 1980s, in the early days of the New Age movement, we did not have the Internet, yet we spread the vision of a New Age on Earth all over the world. Just think what we can achieve now!

Using the Internet, we can find other like-minded people in so many ways. Facebook, MySpace, blogs, forums, Yahoo, Google and MSN groups all offer a way to find other New Age people. Search engines allow us to find organizations and websites that are New Age related. Through services such as meetup.com we can find people and groups locally.

Through these avenues we can find other spiritual seekers. We can share information, inspiration and support. And it gives us an opportunity to educate others about the real meaning of the New Age movement, as a vision of both social and spiritual transformation to create a better world for all of us, and to invite them to join in.

Please consider using these tools to spread the message of the New Age revival. Each one of us has the ability to reach so many people so quickly. Working together, we can bring about the transformation of the world sooner than we might think!

Open your heart to the world

We are all so busy with our own lives, with so many things to do and so much to occupy our time and attention; but should creating a better world have a low priority in our lives?

It doesn’t have to require a lot of time. If you are on a spiritual path, you are already participating at one level. When you do your spiritual practice, you can expand what you are doing to the world level. If your focus is on healing yourself, expand that out to heal the world. If your focus is on raising your own thought, expand that out to raising the consciousness of the whole world. If you are meditating for inner peace, expand that out to help create world peace. If you are working on healing relationships in your own life, expand that out to creating harmony and co-operation in the world.

Take a small step, and see where it leads. You might find a whole new path opening before you.

Diversity and acceptance

There is a great diversity of beliefs included under the New Age umbrella, and those of us who are in the New Age movement often find ourselves talking to people who believe things that we do not, and who do not believe what we believe. But at heart, these beliefs usually share a common basis.

In the 1980s, when the New Age movement was growing and flourishing, I attended many gatherings of New Age people. Meditation groups, discussion groups, musical presentations, workshops, networking events, all were filled with spiritual seekers of many different paths. And one of the things I found so wonderful at these gatherings was the loving acceptance that everyone showed one another. No one argued about beliefs; no one criticized another person’s path; no one even hinted that the other person was wrong for believing what they believed. Everyone joined together in loving support of one another, encouraging both the individual spiritual journeys and the commitment to the vision of the New Age movement. It was, in microcosm, a beautiful example of what the world could be like.

This is one thing we can all offer the New Age revivial – to bring that level of harmony, love and acceptance to our interactions with everyone we meet. Focus on our common ground, release (or enjoy!) the differences, and celebrate what brings us together. By doing this, we model for others how joyful such interaction can be. And every time we do this, we bring the mass consciousness a little closer to that harmony and acceptance that will help to create a better world.

New Age parties

When I was active in the New Age movement in the 1980s, there were all types of gatherings. Meditation groups, lectures, workshops, all sorts of activities that centered around one specific thing or another. What was missing were gatherings that were simply social in nature.

Many of the people who attended all these gatherings were there because they wanted to meet other like-minded people. They sat through the lecture or group with mild interest, but the time before and after the activity was when they could mingle with other spiritual seekers and find kindred souls.

In our process of re-vitalizing the New Age movement, here is one way to help things along: hold a New Age party! Bring together all the people you know who are interested in New Age things, let them meet and share and connect. Tell them about the New Age revival and invite them to be a part.

You can do this on various scales. Just invite people you know to your home, or invite people you know and invite them to bring a friend. Or rent a space and open the gathering to the public, leaving flyers at the local New Age bookstore and placing an ad in the local newspaper. The point is to bring people together and bring back the “movement” part of the New Age movement. Each person who joins in has the potential to reach other people, and those other people can reach still other people. This is how a movement grows.

New Age social gatherings can be an important tool in the New Age Revival. Whether you call it a party, or a social gathering, or a networking meeting, it will bring people with common interests together. You can use this opportunity to bring people’s attention to the origin of the New Age movement as a movement for social as well as spiritual transformation. If you want to emphasize the revival of the New Age movement, you can give out flyers with more information and resources for people who are interested (and I would be honored if you would include this blog as one of the resources!).

There is so much we can all do to help revive the New Age movement and help create a better world. Having a New Age party is a joyful new tool that we can all use. Celebrate the New Age!
